My home state is the beautiful State of California. I’m currently living in AZ, about as far removed ideologically from CA as one could imagine though they share a partial border. This situation is temporary, but I can’t say when it will change.
So I’m here in my condo trying to be as open as my 76 year old brain will permit, imagining how I can be a part of the solution and not of the problem. I’m on a fixed income and dependent on a government pension, Social Security, and disability compensation from the VA for service related conditions related to combat in Vietnam as part of the 1st Air-Cavalry Division 1968-69.
A major concern of mine is that if Trump and the Heritage Foundation tear apart the country much further I will probably have to move in with one of my kids and hope THEIR livelihoods are not devastated also.
From all the indications, the current administration will not be satisfied until we have been reduced to a feudalistic system where there is no middle class, only the haves and the have-nots. Where we are all totally at their mercy. Their entertainment will be pitting us against each other, like in “The Hunger Games” and we are reduced to animal kingdom behavior.
But to hold that off for as long as possible, what can I do? Make phone calls nobody answers? Write letters that end up in the round file? Start storing food and water so I can feed myself and a couple of neighbors for a while if worst comes to worst? I was raised on a farm and we had our own milk, beef, chicken, and pork. We grew and harvested our own alfalfa hay for feed and sale. All I have today is an apartment, a car, and a few bucks in the bank. One of the banks that kissed Trumps’s ass with donations after he got elected. So I don’t even have a lot of faith in the safety of that because anybody that submits to Trump ends up getting fucked twice as hard as if they’d stood their ground with him.
So if starting a community farm or commune is going to be any kind of a solution, how does that even work? I’m surrounded by cactus, tumbleweeds, sand, and rock. There are agricultural regions in this state but they are a long ways from here.
What is anybody doing about this? Everything we’ve tried, the No Kings, and the No Oligarchs Tour by Bernie and AOC that seem promising, the YouTube and Substack podcasters etc. don’t fill me with confidence that this will work out for us in the end.
I’m not usually pessimistic about things but the part of the Project 2025 plan that overwhelms ordinary citizens and psychologically bludgeons them into submission and passivity with the shock and awe of one unspeakably Un-American outrage after another is pretty fucking well thought out and effective, I gotta say. I’m not trying to hand these satanic motherfuckers any compliments, just trying to wrap my head around what we are dealing with here.
I don’t have the answers either. All my life I believed that if I was strong in my patriotism and my country (which is why I volunteered for the Army during the Vietnam War), that everything else would take care of itself. I was naive enough to think America’s enemies were in some other country and it would always be easy to tell them apart. So I guess I let my guard down and forgot about the “eternal vigilance” that freedom and liberty demand. And I don’t think now that I was alone in that.
I only hope and fervently pray that while we were asleep at the switch the damage done is not irreversible.
But I have spent my entire adult life (up until 2016 anyway) thinking that as long as I make sure my voice is heard by casting my vote every couple of years, that I was doing everything necessary to retain the status quo politically. That our sacred Democracy would always prevail. That the United States would always stand as that beacon of hope, with the sacred inscription at the base of the Statue of Liberty, always beckoning to others: Throw off your yoke, gather your loved ones and come, partake of what God has enabled and inspired us to create on these shining shores!
Only to wake up in 2025 and wonder if the maniac in the White House that thinks “nuclear war wouldn’t be that bad” is going to get us involved in one and turn the planet into a smoking cinder with a radioactive half-life of about 30,000 years!
I could go on. I’m long on fears and complaints and short on plans and solutions.
Anyone who wants to, please check in on any of what I’ve said here or the questions I’ve raised. I’ve said it before and I still do: I’ve gone to war for this country once and I’ll do it again if I have to. And this time it IS for THIS country!

Go to your local native American Reservation…be big enough to say you are sorry (as I am) about how they have and are being treated. Right now Emily Pike and a number of other native girls have been murdered and dismembered and no one is doing anything about it. THEN ask if there is something you can do for them. Last ask if they could help you make a community where you can live off the land together. Natives CAN get food from that land and you can plant foods there you can eat. MAKE a community.
Take that letter the Pope / Bishop wrote about helping immigrants to some of the local churches and ask them what they think of that. DO NOT say what your opinion is. If they say “I’ll pray for you” say thanks and leave. If they say I am interested then ask your next question if they would like to be part of a community to help one another as these Big Bad bill cuts happen AFTER the midterms and Jan 2029 when Republicans have left strategic time bombs. Maybe after one of there masses in a public spot near the church you can go over how you can help one another. Who know triage and others who know about healing herbs there are a lot of them. Maybe some people have bigger homes and are lonely and they could take some people in for very low rent if they help with groceries and the like.
